Who we are
Prowess (“we”, “us”) is a running gait-analysis app published by ShoeSense Inc. We can be reached at connor@wearprowess.com.
What we collect
Account information
- Email address — used for sign-in and account recovery.
- Display name (optional) — used to personalize your dashboard.
Sensor data
When your Prowess sensor records a run, the app uploads:
- Per-step gait metrics — 16 numerical measurements per foot strike, including ground impact, contact time, cadence, stride length, vertical oscillation, pronation, and related biomechanical fields.
- Session metadata — timestamp, duration, step count, which foot was wearing the sensor, the training goal you selected.
- Sensor identifier — the Bluetooth ID of the paired sensor.
We do not collect GPS location or audio. Prowess never reads your device’s location: there is no GPS tracking of your runs, and your route is never recorded.
Home city (optional)
If you enter a home city on your Profile, Prowess uses it to note the weather on your runs — temperature affects cadence, so it is useful context on a trend.
- What is stored — the city name plus its approximate latitude and longitude, saved to your account. To be precise about what that means: this is city-level, coarse location — the coordinates of the city’s center, not of you. It does not change as you move and it is not read from your device.
- Third party — the city name you type is sent to Open-Meteo to look up those coordinates and the weather. Your name, email, and account ID are not sent.
- Optional and removable — leave the field blank and none of this is collected. Clear it at any time from Profile → Home city and we stop storing it.
Running-form video
Prowess includes an optional video gait analysis feature. It only runs when you start a capture — nothing is recorded in the background.
- What is recorded — short video clips of you running, filmed with your device’s camera. The clips are silent: we record no audio and never request microphone access.
- Where it goes — clips you choose to save are uploaded to Google Cloud Storage (United States) under our Firebase project, at a path keyed to your account. Pose analysis runs on your device.
- What it is used for — to show you your own running form, to compute the pose measurements shown alongside it, and — only if you have accepted a coach or clinician invite — to let that person review it with you. We do not use your video to train models, and we never use it for advertising.
- Camera roll — Prowess does not read your photo library. It only uses clips recorded inside the app.
- Deleting it — you can delete any clip from the analysis screen, which removes the file from our storage. Deleting your account removes all remaining clips (see How long we keep it).
Apple Health (HealthKit)
If you grant permission, Prowess uses Apple HealthKit to write the runs Prowess records back to Apple Health, so they appear alongside everything else you track. Prowess is write-only: it does not read any data out of Apple Health.
HealthKit access is optional, is controlled by you in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Health, and can be revoked at any time. Health data obtained through HealthKit is used only to provide these in-app features. We never use Health data for advertising or marketing, we never sell it, and we never share it with third parties for their own purposes — consistent with Apple’s HealthKit requirements.
App behavior
- Goal selection and exercise completion — saved so your progress persists across devices.
- Crash and error reports — when the app crashes we record a non-personal stack trace via Sentry. Reports include your user ID but no email, no name, and no gait data.
- Device verification — we use Apple's DeviceCheck (iOS) and Google Play Integrity (Android) to confirm requests come from a real Prowess install. These services return an opaque token; we do not see your device's hardware ID.
We do not collect: precise location, contacts, your photo library, microphone or any audio, or browsing history. The camera is used only for the two purposes described above — scanning your pod’s QR sticker when you pair it, and the optional running-form video you start yourself. Calendar access, if you grant it, is used only to list your calendars so you can pick one and to add the strength sessions you schedule. We do not read your existing events, and nothing from your calendar leaves your device.
How we use your data
- To run the app: store your sessions, compute your trends, sync data across your devices.
- To improve the app: aggregate, anonymized usage statistics help us prioritize features.
- To diagnose crashes: stack traces help us fix bugs.
- To prevent abuse: device verification stops automated scraping of the API.
We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers, or use it for advertising profiling.
Where your data lives
Your data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore and Google Cloud Storage, in the United States, under our Firebase project shoesense-v2. Crash reports go to Sentry (United States). Both providers are bound by their own privacy commitments (Firebase; Sentry).
How long we keep it
- Account and gait data: until you delete your account.
- Running-form video: until you delete the clip, or until you delete your account — whichever comes first.
- Crash reports: 90 days, then automatically removed.
- Server logs: 30 days.
One exception — clinical records. If a licensed clinician used Prowess to perform an assessment of you, that specific assessment (and any video attached to it) may be retained after account deletion, separated from your account, because health-care providers are legally required to keep patient records for a minimum period. Everything else is deleted. This applies only to assessments a clinician actually performed; ordinary self-recorded runs and clips are never held back.
Your rights
You can:
- Access your data — every session is visible in the app.
- Delete your account from the Profile → Delete account screen. This removes your sessions, gait data, running-form video, account, and all coach links from our servers within 30 days, subject to the clinical-records exception above. The deletion runs through our
deleteAccount Cloud Function and is irreversible.
- Export your data — email connor@wearprowess.com and we will return a JSON archive of your sessions within 30 days.
- Object or restrict processing — email us and we will pause processing pending review.
If you are in the EU/EEA, the UK, or California you have additional rights under GDPR or CCPA. We honor those rights regardless of where you live.
Children
Prowess is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EU). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has signed up, email us and we will delete the account.
Sharing data with coaches
If you accept a coach invite, the coach you accepted gets read access to your sessions. You can revoke that access at any time from the Profile screen. Coaches cannot delete your data; only you can.
If your clinician uses Prowess
Physical therapists and clinics use Prowess to run gait assessments. When they do, the clinician — not you — creates and owns a client record, and you do not need a Prowess account for one to exist. This section explains what that means, because it is the one place where data about you can be in Prowess without you having signed up.
- What a clinician can store — your name, their own free-text clinical notes, and the assessments, measurements, and any running-form video they record during your visit.
- Whose record it is — theirs. It is stored under the clinician’s account, and it is a health-care record governed by their obligations to you as a patient, the same as the rest of your chart. If they later link it to your own Prowess account, you see the assessments in the app.
- What we do with it — we store and process it so the clinician can provide care. We do not use it for advertising, we never sell it, and we do not use it to train models.
- How long it lasts — because these are clinical records, they are kept even if the clinician closes their Prowess account: they are moved to a separate hold rather than deleted, since health-care providers must retain patient records for a minimum period. This is the same exception described under How long we keep it.
- Your rights over it — ask your clinician first; as the record holder they can correct, release, or amend it. You can also email us at connor@wearprowess.com and we will help, working with them.
When Prowess handles records on a clinician’s behalf we act as their service provider, under a written agreement that limits us to providing the service.
Changes to this policy
If we materially change this policy we will:
- Post the updated version at this URL.
- Show an in-app notice the next time you open Prowess.
- Require you to re-consent before continuing to use the app.
